Title of Lecture: The Embattled Language Situation in Jamaica: the roles of English and Creole in the Educational Arena.
ABSTRACT
This lecture addresses the historical linguistic hegemony of English language in Jamaica, and the encroaching role of Jamaican Creole (Jamaican) in the education sector. Specifically, the lecture focuses on the fairly recent national language education policy - monoliterate transitional bilingualism - and an alternative represented by the radical Jamaican Bilingual Education Project, initiated by the Jamaican Language Unit, a unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy of the University of the West Indies at Mona. In the latter, students in four primary schools acquired literacy in Jamaican and subsequently learned English (Jamaica’s sole official language) as a second language. These developments are explored within the context of the increasing number of Jamaican university students with substandard levels of English language proficiency, and the present upholding of multilingualism and multiple literacies by scholars in the academic fields of applied linguistics, rhetoric and composition, and language learning.
